Artist Statement:

I was born and grew up in Memphis, TN. As a child I drew and painted with “paint-by numbers.” Years passed and this “art” was replaced with academic studies ending with graduate school. Majors in mathematics and electrical engineering led to a 30-year Defense Department career in MD as a cryptanalytic mathematician and computer scientist. Retirement led to a move to Colorado to be closer to the mountains and wildlife I’ve always loved and also to begin my journey to become an artist!

This journey began in 1995 in the Colorado Springs Senior Center where I took my first art classes. I love to learn new things and, since the beginning classes, rarely go a year without taking a class or workshop. Some of the nationally known artists I have studied under are: Lorraine Danzo, Tom Owen, Joe Bohler, Bob Cox, Jose Sanchez, Frank Francese, Carl Purcell, Stephen Quiller, Barbara Nechis, and Jan Hart.

I am a signature member of PPWS and SCWS and a member of CWS. Also, I helped form and am a member of 2 critique/painting groups in the area: Primary Colors and Nuance.

To me, color touches the heart, and in fact color is the soul of a painting. Being surrounded by all the natural beauty in the Pikes Peak region stimulates me to try to capture this beauty and color in my paintings. I love bright colors and sharp contrasts. I enjoy landscapes, florals, architecture, and wildlife and occasionally will paint surreal subjects, like my “rusty pipe” series.
